How to install hinges on a new interior door.

Assuming you re installing a new door you ll need to find the precise location on the door frame. Open the door and stand with your back to the hinges. If the doorknob is on the left you need a left handed door. Again using the old door as a template with a pencil mark on the new door where the hinges and door knob will be located.

How to hang a door in an existing jamb. Make sure it s flush. Close old door and measure up 12 inches from threshold and mark the door. Place the existing door on top of the new door.

Remove door from hinge knuckles. Unscrew the lockset from old door. Mount the hinges on the new door and hang the door. Place your hinges in the correct location.

If the knob is to the right select a right handed door. Keep tops and hinge edges flush. Mark the hinge placement use a speed square to mark the top and bottom of each hinge on the new door. If you re installing a pre hung door make sure you get the correct swing determined by the placement of the hinges and doorknob.

Align the top edge of both doors and use the existing door as a guide for marking the hinge placement on the new door. If you have a third hinge typically used for heavy doors it will be placed directly in the middle of the other two hinges. Pull hinge pins and take down old door. Set the door on its side with the inside edge of the door where the hinges will go facing up against a stable surface such as a work bench.

Trim door to correct size. If you don t need any further adjustments remove the door again then finish it to match the rest of the woodwork and rehang it. One hinge is located 7 inches from the top of the door frame and the other hinge is located 11 inches from the bottom of the door frame. Some blank doors have a specific swing direction.

3 place the hinge on the door as if it were already. Working from the hinge side or rear of the door take out the door knob and existing lock set. Lay old door on top of new door. Measure this distance and mark the location on the frame and then do the same on the door that you re hanging.
