We usually begin by installing a piece of peel and stick flashing folding it into the corner between the roof and the wall.

Installing kickout flashing on existing roof with stucco siding.

Next install a starter strip of roofing then use the kickout flashing in place of the first piece of step flashing. Nail it to the sidewall or glue it if nailing isn t possible. The kickout goes in next followed by standard step flashings. Slip in the flashing.

Trim the housewrap piece around the wing of the kickout flashing and along the roof line. Install roofing felt or synthetic roofing underlayment over the roof running it up the wall at least as high as where the top of the step flashing will be 3. If the kick out and step flashing can t tuck behind the siding screw on cap flashing to cover it then caulk along the top. Typically made of aluminium or galvanized steel flashing is any material used over joints in your walls or roof to prevent water from seeping through.

In certain instances flashing may need to be installed on the exterior of siding. The image here shows the kickout flashing circled by yellow. Install shingles over the portion of step flashing on the roof. When installing metal or rubber membrane roofs use continuous flashing rather than pieces of step flashing.

Since the kickout wall leg is applied over the housewrap beneath any water that may leak by the cut will be redirected out onto the siding surface through the lap you placed the 2 ft x 3 ft piece of housewrap over. Applying flashing to a stucco roof or walls requires both cement and nails as well as caulk or more stucco to create a water tight seal. However in most instances step flashing should be installed behind siding. Lift the bottom shingle and slip in the kickout flashing.

Install roof felt prior to installing the step and kick out flashing. Then tape the sides of the housewrap piece down. Install house siding over the step flashing ending at least one inch above the roof surface. In this example the kickout is installed with a stucco sided home but kickouts are needed with any vertical wall cladding type siding brick etc.

It is always recommended to install step flashing behind stucco dryvit wood panel lap siding vinyl siding cedar shingle siding etc.
